What are the signs or causes of bullying at work? How to spot bullying at work?

Here are some signs of a problem at work:

  • General employee unhappiness.
  • Negative atmosphere at work.
  • Poor work attendance of employees.
  • Poor feedback from employees on their managers.
  • Increased resignations.
  • Increased requests for short term holidays.
  • Increased requests for sick leave.
  • Employees attending work even when ill.
  • Employees showing a lack of motivation and commitment.
  • Employees shut down emotionally. One sign is affective blunting (not showing facial expression).
  • Employees complain about physical pain while doing their jobs, e.g. headaches, muscle pain, and otherwise healthy employees complain that their health is deteriorating.
  • Increased poor service complaints from customers.
  •  Tip
    • If you are unhappy at work; make sure you are giving your health needs the highest priority. Speak to your GP if you are experiencing stress, insomnia and feelings of despair.
    • Keep a record of these visits and of the payments.
    • It could be of value later if you decide to claim should you leave the company.
