What is not bullying or what are exceptions to bullying at work?

  • One-off incidents of bad behaviour. An example is when a colleague seems to step out of line and it is an once-off occasion.
  • When your employer asks you do to tasks that would be considered reasonable and you are trained to do it.
  • Positive and constructive feedback on your work performance and your employer is taking your explanation of events into consideration.
  • The outcome of an unsatisfactory performance appraisal when the rules of natural justice have been followed. Natural justice requires that your employer gives you notice of the breach of conduct on your part and give you a reasonable time to respond to the allegations and/or enough time and training to rectify the action. You can ask for proof that your explanation has been considered. Also there must be enough time for you to follow the guidelines before the next step is taken. This could be a written warning.
  • Some vocations have higher standards of performance e.g. health and police. These higher standards demanded by the employer are excluded from bullying behaviour provided it is applied fairly.
  • Procedurally correct disciplinary action based on the code of conduct or other documents or guidelines. It is important that procedures are followed correctly. Even if the employer is getting a wrong answer; they would have complied with this rule.
